Programs Worth Knowing
Indiana University Bloomington offers an M.S. in Apparel Merchandising through the Eskenazi School of Art, Architecture + Design — one of the few merchandising master’s degrees housed in a design school rather than a business department.
Washington State University runs an M.S. in Apparel, Merchandising, Design and Textiles built around a research thesis, plus an individualized doctoral track — the route for future faculty and researchers.
Beyond these, most graduate fashion-business education happens inside MBA programs with retail concentrations, or in fashion management master’s degrees at design schools. Check any program’s placement record before committing: ask where the last two cohorts work now.
Who Actually Needs One
Three groups: aspiring faculty (a master’s is the entry ticket and the doctorate is the career), researchers in consumer behavior and retail analytics, and career-changers entering fashion from an unrelated field who need both the network and the credential. Working merchandisers aiming at head-buyer or planning-director roles usually gain more from five years of P&L responsibility than from two years of graduate school.
