Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT): Programs, Cost, Admissions

By Ankit P. · Reviewed October 24, 2026 · Editorial policy

The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) is a public college of the State University of New York in Chelsea, Manhattan, and one of the most recognised fashion schools in the world. It combines a famous design program with large business, technology and communication programs, at a public-college price that is a fraction of New York’s private art schools. This profile covers its fashion programs, cost, admissions and outcomes from U.S. Department of Education data, and who it suits.

Fashion programs

FIT is organised into a School of Art and Design, a Jay and Patty Baker School of Business and Technology, and a School of Liberal Arts, and almost every program connects to the fashion industry. On the design side, fashion design is taught through a two-year associate of applied science (AAS) followed, for most students, by a two-year bachelor of fine arts (BFA) with specialisations such as sportswear, knitwear, children’s wear and special occasion. Related design majors include accessories design, textile and surface design, and fashion photography-adjacent programs in the art and design school. On the business side, FIT is equally strong: fashion business management, textile development and marketing, advertising and marketing communications, cosmetics and fragrance marketing, technical design and production management.

The structure matters for applicants. High school students cannot apply directly to the fashion design BFA: they apply to the AAS, and FIT’s own AAS graduates receive priority consideration for the BFA. Transfer students with an equivalent associate degree, or at least 60 credits toward an equivalent bachelor’s, can apply straight to the BFA. FIT’s annual Future of Fashion runway show presents graduating design students’ work to the industry.

Cost

As a SUNY college, FIT charges public tuition. Federal data lists published tuition of $6,596 a year for New York residents and $17,576 for out-of-state students, and an average net price after grants of $16,514 a year. The net price includes living costs, and living in Manhattan is the largest expense for students who do not live at home: FIT has residence halls, but budget for New York rents if you plan to live off campus after the first year. For in-state students who can commute, FIT is one of the best-value fashion educations in the country.

Admissions

FIT admitted 60% of applicants in the most recent federal data, but that average hides wide differences between majors. Business and liberal arts programs admit on academic record; art and design programs, including fashion design, also require a portfolio, and design is the most competitive. FIT asks design applicants for original sketches and artwork, and strongly recommends sewing skills. Check FIT’s current portfolio requirements before you start preparing, because they change, and make sure every piece is your own work.

Outcomes

FIT reports a completion rate of 81% in federal data, one of the highest among the fashion schools we track. Federal earnings data shows a median of $72,055 ten years after starting at FIT, across all majors. Those figures reflect both the college’s selectivity and its location: students intern in New York’s design studios, showrooms, buying offices and media companies during school, and many are hired by the companies where they interned.

Studying in Chelsea

FIT’s campus sits a few blocks from the Garment District, the area of Midtown Manhattan where showrooms, fabric and trim stores, pattern makers and sample rooms are still concentrated. That proximity shapes the education: faculty include working designers and executives, guest critics come from nearby companies, and students can source materials and attend market weeks without leaving the neighbourhood. The trade-off is that student life is the city itself rather than a self-contained campus, and housing is tight and expensive.

Questions to ask before applying

  • Which major do you actually want? FIT admits by major, so applying to fashion design and fashion business management are separate decisions with different requirements.
  • Can you commute? Living at home in the New York area removes the biggest cost; if not, compare residence hall prices with the net price figure above.
  • Are you ready for a two-step degree? Plan for the associate degree first and a separate application to the bachelor’s.
  • Is your portfolio built around your own original work, including garments you have made yourself?

Who FIT suits

  • New York residents who want a top-tier fashion education at public tuition.
  • Design students who already sew and draw, and are ready for an intensive, industry-focused studio program.
  • Business-minded students who want merchandising, marketing or product development in the middle of the U.S. fashion industry.

Who should look elsewhere

  • Students who want a traditional campus with large grounds and college sports; FIT is a city campus in a few Chelsea blocks.
  • Out-of-state students who cannot afford New York living costs; a strong public program in your own state may give you similar skills for less.
  • Students wanting a conceptual, art-school approach to design may prefer a school like Parsons.

How FIT compares

FIT and Parsons are the two New York names most students consider. Parsons is a private, conceptual art and design school with tuition many times higher; FIT is public and more directly industry-focused. For merchandising, FIT competes with LIM College nearby and with large public universities elsewhere. Every New York option is compared on cost in the New York fashion schools guide, and the New York City guide covers what studying in the city involves.

Frequently asked questions

Is FIT hard to get into?

Overall it admits about 60% of applicants, but fashion design is far more competitive than that figure suggests because it depends on the portfolio.

Is FIT only for New York residents?

No. It enrolls students from across the country and abroad, but New York residents pay much lower tuition.

Can I start at FIT with a bachelor’s in fashion design?

Not directly from high school. You start in the two-year associate program, then apply to the bachelor’s.
