Fashion Schools in San Francisco and the Bay Area: Costs and Industry

By Anki P · Reviewed by Kamila Katkauskaite (Creative Brand & Content Coordinator), November 1, 2026 · Editorial policy

The San Francisco Bay Area is a fashion business region more than a fashion design one. Gap Inc. and Levi Strauss & Co. are headquartered in San Francisco, along with Stitch Fix and TheRealReal, and fashion pay in the region is among the highest in the country. The region’s fashion schools have changed sharply: FIDM’s San Francisco campus is gone, and California College of the Arts will close in June 2027. The main options now are the Academy of Art University, San Francisco State and a ring of low-cost community colleges.

This guide replaces our earlier Bay Area article. It compares the colleges within reach of San Francisco, the local industry and the cost of living. For every California program, see our California fashion schools guide, and for Southern California, our guide to fashion schools in Los Angeles.

The main programs

Academy of Art University

The Academy of Art’s School of Fashion is at 79 New Montgomery Street in downtown San Francisco. It offers BFAs in fashion design, textile design, costume design, fashion marketing, merchandising, product development and styling, several associate degrees on the business side, and MFAs. Admission is open: no portfolio or prior experience is required. Undergraduate tuition for 2026-27 is $1,366 a unit, or $32,784 for a 24-unit year. Its graduation rate is low, so ask about support and completion before you enroll. More detail is on our Academy of Art University profile.

San Francisco State University

SF State offers a B.S. in Apparel Design and Merchandising with design and merchandising concentrations. Students work in an apparel production lab, a textile testing lab and a 3D design lab, show their work on the runway, and take internships across the Bay Area. No portfolio is listed for entry. California residents pay $6,838 in 2026-27 tuition plus $1,986 in campus fees. SF State estimates the full cost of a year, living off campus, at $39,944.

Community colleges

California residents pay $46 a unit at community colleges. Cañada College in Redwood City has four fashion associate degrees, from custom dressmaking to technical apparel and theater costuming. College of Alameda teaches apparel design and merchandising and says its alumni work in the Bay Area as designers, technical designers and pattern makers. West Valley College in Saratoga has a production lab and teaches 3D patternmaking. City College of San Francisco and Santa Rosa Junior College also offer fashion programs.

Closed and closing programs

California College of the Arts announced in January 2026 that it will close at the end of the 2026-27 academic year, and it is not accepting applications. Vanderbilt University will take over the campus. Current CCA fashion design students have a teach-out path into SF State’s apparel design and merchandising degree. The independent FIDM closed all its programs on March 31, 2025; its name now belongs to Arizona State University’s fashion school, which teaches in Los Angeles and Phoenix, not San Francisco.

The industry around the schools

Bay Area fashion jobs are concentrated in corporate offices. Gap Inc., owner of Old Navy, Gap, Banana Republic and Athleta, has its headquarters at Two Folsom Street, and Levi Strauss & Co., founded in San Francisco in 1853, is at Levi’s Plaza. Stitch Fix pairs 1,575 stylists with recommendation algorithms, and TheRealReal authenticates and resells luxury goods from its San Francisco base. These companies hire for merchandising, planning, sourcing, product development, marketing and data roles, so a merchandising or business-side degree is often the more direct route to work here than studio design.

Jobs and pay

Fashion pay in the Bay Area is among the highest in the country. In May 2025, fashion designers in the San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont metro area earned a median of $102,370, against $80,960 nationally, though only a few hundred designers work there. Buyers and purchasing agents earned a median of $93,600 in the San Francisco metro and $101,500 in San Jose. Our fashion merchandising degree guide explains those jobs.

What it costs to live here

Housing is the main barrier. SF State’s own estimate for a California student living off campus in 2026-27 is $39,944 for the year, far more than tuition. Many community college students live at home and commute.

San Francisco has no general college student transit discount. A Muni monthly pass costs $86. Adults with household incomes at or below 200% of the federal poverty level can get Clipper START, which takes 50% off single rides on most Bay Area transit. The Academy of Art runs free shuttles between its buildings and residence halls.

Transfer routes

California has no fashion Associate Degree for Transfer, but SF State lists its apparel design and merchandising degree as a similar major for several transfer degrees, including Studio Art and Business Administration. Students who complete one of those at a community college and take fashion courses at Cañada, Alameda, City College or West Valley can transfer and graduate in about 120 units. Check course credit on ASSIST before you start.

Is studying fashion in the Bay Area worth it?

For California residents interested in the business side of fashion, yes: SF State and the community colleges are affordable, and the region’s corporate employers pay well. For students set on a design career, the Bay Area now has fewer choices than it did, and Los Angeles or New York may offer more. The cost of living is the deciding factor for anyone moving here.
