Fashion Schools in Detroit: Costs and Industry Guide

By Anki P · Reviewed by Kamila Katkauskaite (Creative Brand & Content Coordinator), November 5, 2026 · Editorial policy

Detroit’s fashion industry is about workwear, accessories and design for cars. Carhartt, founded in Michigan in 1889, runs its headquarters and global design facility in Dearborn; Shinola assembles watches in the city; and the automakers hire color and materials designers, a path some fashion graduates have taken. The area’s fashion schools include a private art and design college with a well-known accessories track, a public university in Midtown, a community college program on the east side and a fashion marketing program in Ypsilanti.

This guide compares those programs, the local industry and the cost of living. For every Michigan program, including Michigan State and Kendall College of Art and Design, see our Michigan fashion schools guide.

Costs below are published in-state tuition and the average net price after grants, from U.S. Department of Education data. Net price includes housing and food. Official 2026-27 prices are in the program notes below.

The main programs

College for Creative Studies (CCS)

CCS offers a BFA in Fashion Design that covers both apparel and accessories, including footwear and handbags, with separate fashion design and fashion accessories design tracks in its 121-credit curriculum. The program began in 2015 as a fashion accessories degree developed with Shinola and grew into a full fashion design program in 2021. Applicants submit a portfolio, and Carhartt designers have reviewed students’ final work. CCS also offers a three-year, 90-credit Fashion Business Management BA that needs no portfolio. Tuition for 2026-27 is $1,865 a credit hour, or a flat $27,975 for 12 to 18 credits.

Wayne State University

Wayne State in Midtown teaches fashion design as a concentration in its Design BFA and fashion merchandising as a concentration in its Design and Merchandising BA. Its Design and Merchandising BS is not admitting new students. The merchandising degree includes a supervised field experience, and no portfolio is needed to enter either degree. In 2026-27, Michigan residents in their first two years pay a flat $7,583.60 a semester for full-time study in Wayne State’s arts college, and nonresidents $16,738.27.

Wayne County Community College

WCCCD teaches fashion design at its Eastern Campus on Conner Street, with associate degrees and certificates in fashion design, industrial tailoring and merchandising. Students take a fashion show production course and present their work at the Design Detroit Fashion showcase, which was held on May 1, 2026. Tuition is $112 a credit hour for district residents, $121.20 for other Michigan residents and $151.80 for out-of-state students.

Eastern Michigan University

EMU in Ypsilanti runs a Fashion Marketing Innovation program whose annual portfolio show draws more than 20 employers. EMU says about 80% of its fashion marketing students get a job or internship from the event. EMU’s 2026-27 tuition is $717.50 a credit hour, or $8,550 a semester for 12 to 16 credits.

Michigan State University

For a design degree at a large public university, many Detroit-area students look to Michigan State in East Lansing, which offers BA and BFA degrees in apparel and textiles; BFA seniors present a final collection. Estimated 2026-27 tuition is $17,656 for Michigan residents.

The industry around the schools

Carhartt is the largest local apparel employer, using its Dearborn design facility to select fabrics and designs, and in 2022 it added 125 jobs in Dearborn, including product design roles. Shinola’s openings in Detroit are mostly in watch assembly and creative work. The Industrial Sewing and Innovation Center on West Baltimore Avenue trains people in industrial sewing and has trained 140 so far.

The car companies are an unusual option. General Motors profiles a Wayne State fashion design and merchandising graduate who went on to a master’s at CCS and now leads color and materials design for Chevrolet performance vehicles. Detroit Denim, a local jeans maker, has closed, as has the Art Institute of Michigan.

Jobs and pay

The federal survey does not publish a Detroit figure for fashion designers, and it counts only about 40 statewide, with a Michigan median of $63,430 against $80,960 nationally. Detroit’s design jobs are mostly in industrial and product design: commercial and industrial designers in the metro area earned a median of $108,180 in May 2025. Buyers and purchasing agents earned a median of $80,300, above the national $77,710. Our fashion merchandising degree guide explains buying jobs.

What it costs to live here

Rent in Detroit is low by big-city standards. HUD sets fair market rents by ZIP code here. For fiscal 2026 they are $920 a month for a studio and $1,030 for a one-bedroom in Midtown ZIP code 48202, where CCS and Wayne State are, and $1,520 and $1,690 downtown.

A four-hour Dart pass for DDOT and SMART buses costs $2, and a 31-day pass $70. Since May 2026, college students ride SMART buses free with a student ID, and the QLINE streetcar is free for everyone. Wayne State subsidizes Dart passes for its students through WayneRides, which students request each semester.

Transfer routes and aid

The Michigan Transfer Agreement lets students who complete 30 qualifying general education credits at a Michigan college carry them as a block to a four-year school such as Wayne State. WCCCD’s fashion degrees are applied career degrees, so their fashion courses do not transfer automatically; ask the four-year school in advance.

The Michigan Achievement Scholarship pays up to $5,500 a year at four-year colleges in 2026-27, plus a $1,000 bonus on top of community college awards, for students who meet Michigan residency rules. The Wayne State Guarantee covers 100% of tuition and fees for most families earning $80,000 or less with $50,000 or less in assets, and Wayne State’s Heart of Detroit pledge covers tuition for Detroit residents and graduates of Detroit high schools.

Is studying fashion in Detroit worth it?

For accessories, workwear and product design, yes. CCS has an accessories track with links to brands like Carhartt, Wayne State has the lowest average cost after grants of Detroit’s four-year schools, and rent is low. Detroit has few fashion designer jobs, so students set on fashion houses should plan to move or compare Chicago and New York.

Frequently asked questions

Does CCS still offer fashion accessories design?

Yes, as a track within its Fashion Design BFA. The separate accessories degree became part of the broader program.

Is Wayne State’s fashion merchandising degree still open?

What is the cheapest way to study fashion in Detroit?

Wayne County Community College, at $112 a credit hour for district residents.
